To cut down trees, it's very simple! First you must to be in possession of an ax, but be careful, this one should not be rudimentary. Rudimentary axes are not powerful enough to chop down a tree!

To change from a rudimentary ax to a normal ax, you must first have obtained the DIY plan named "Making Good Tools", which sells at the Nook Stop, in exchange for Nook Miles. Once you have this blueprint, you can craft an ax at the construction workbench!

Once you have a real axe, just walk up to the tree, and hit him three times. At the end of the third blow it will fall, and only its stump will remain. You can use your shovel for remove this stump and plug the hole.
